Purpose: Photosensitivity can represent a serious problem in epilepsy patients, also because pharmacologic treatment is often ineffective. Nonpharmacologic treatment using blue sunglasses is effective and safe in controlling photosensitivity, but large series of patients have never been studied.
Results: Six hundred ten epilepsy patients were tested. Four hundred (66%) were female patients; 396 (65%) were younger than 14 years. Three hundred eighty-one (62%) subjects were pharmacologically treated at the time of investigation. Z1 lenses made PPR disappear in 463 (75.9%) patients, and PPR was considerably reduced in an additional 109 (17.9%) of them. PPR remained unchanged only in the remaining 38 (6.2%) patients. The response of PPR to Z1 lenses was not significantly influenced by the patients' age, sex, or type of epilepsy. No difference was found between pharmacologically treated and untreated patients.

I found a study which shows that Carl Zeiss brand z1 blue lenses are highly effective in treating photosensitive epilepsy. The study is at: -synergy.com/doi/full/10.1111/j.1528-1167.2006.00463.x?prevSearch=allfield%3A%28z1%29.
These lenses are available in Europe, but I haven't been able to find them in the US or on the internet. I emailed Zeiss customer service about this, but I got no response. Does anyone know where I can find these lenses. I suffer from photosensitivity (as well as temporal lobe epilepsy). I use polarized glasses, and these help some, but I'd really love to try these lenses.
Also, has anyone with photosensitivity tried using any kind of blue tinted glasses, or cross polarized glasses? If you have had good results, would you please tell me which brand you used and where I can find them?
The lenses are in fact very helpful! There are 3 sources I know of. You can order them to be made with your vision prescription or you can get plain lenses to be put in a clip-on. There's more information at -with-zeiss-z1-f133-protective-lenses/.
The clinic provides the lenses for $250 (March 2012 price). You can order them as uncut lenses or, with a prescription and frame (or frame information), make up a pair of prescription glasses. In December 2013 Larra H. reports that you can also order them in a fit-over, standalone frame that covers the field of view more thoroughly. Cost for the Zeiss lenses has apparently dropped, so the plain Zeiss lenses in a fit-over frame is now down to $165.
In the discussion section it says the lenses block wavelengths from 550-700 nanometers, which is yellow, orange, and red. The fact that they also greatly reduce the total amount of light probably helps, too:
We now have in stock both the BPI deep blue zee and the Zeiss Z1 F133 plano lenses in stock for mounting into most all ophthalmic frames and clips from most quality clip combination frames. These lenses are also available in single vision and select bifocal prescription lenses. Please call for further information. Also visit our facebook page for the various other therapeutic tinted lenses we offer, such as lenses that filter HEV blue light, macular degeneration, and other light sensitive issues. 732-974-3937. This is Dr. Steve Cantrell in St. Louis. My office is currently treating 27 patients with Photosensitive Epilepsy. If diagnosed with PSE the Zeiss and generic version works well but greater success with custom tinted Soft or Rigid Gas Permeable contact lenses. Contacts offer a more complete block as they cover the entire pupil. Symptoms are critical in determining if this technology will work. If you have any additional questions please contact me through e mail: scantrellod@gmail.com
My doctor has recommended these lenses for me as I have photo sensitivity seizures. I currently have a drivers license; does anyone use these lenses to drive? Can you see stop lights, especially red? See sirens? Stop signs? Thank you for any information.
Hello, Yes Zeiss option is a wonderful lens and effective. We have developed two different contact lenses with this feature that can be worn all day. So far one patient has been seizure free for 2 years and 2 others for 6 months. Available in Rigid Gas Permeable and Soft daily wear. This lens also appears to eliminate resting EEG activity. Has been extremely effective. For information please contact Dr. Steven Cantrell scantrellod@gmail.com or call 314 961-7511. Our patients have been thrilled and one is off all medication with her Neurologists blessing. Steven Cantrell, O.D.
The Zeiss Cobalt Blue lens appears to be working to prevent Photo Sensitive Seizures. I am an Optometrist in St. Louis and recently fit one of my patients with Rigid Gas Permeable contact lenses custom tinted with the deep blue filter. She has been wearing these contact lenses now for 10 weeks and reports no photo sensitive episodes. She can shop again in stores that caused trouble and flickering sunlight through the trees no longer triggers a problem.

The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically affected our work and personal lives. Research has shown that people of all ages are spending more time on digital devices. Besides facing potentially harmful blue light emitted by the sun, people also spend more time indoors where buildings are nowadays equipped with blue light-emitting LEDs. This can cause digital eyestrain and affect sleep.
As the sun sets, the lack of light signals the body to produce melatonin. This hormone is responsible for us getting tired and falling asleep. Blue light from smartphones or laptops for example, can interfere with the release of melatonin. As a result, this can often lead to problems falling asleep and sleeping through the night. You can now prescribe high-quality blue light blocking lenses for your customers to block that part of the blue light spectrum.

Update as of 12/11/20: Zeiss has confirmed that, even without a paid Adobe account, you are able to use Lightroom Mobile on the ZX1 to do basic editing and adjustments. You won't be able to use so-called 'premium features' (denoted by the blue stars on the icons in the image below), but this should set many users' minds at ease in that the vast majority of adjustments you may want to take advantage of are available subscription-free.
Noisey... unreliable AF... sluggish operation... inferior JPEG color and white balance... poor interface... no interchangeable lenses... and all this for only $6000. Can you say HARD PASS?... I sure can... probably for the far superior D850 at about 1/3 the price.

I haven't been able to find cobalt blue sunglasses to fit over my regular glasses. I currently use gray Polare Cocoons sunglasses, and they help against flourescents but not against turn signals. I see other stypes, but don't know if they can help. 781b155fdc
